You’ve heard that you don’t know what you’ve got until it’s gone. If you’re like 70 percent of Americans, you have at least one missing tooth.
And until you’re missing teeth, you never have to think about what it’s like to have to smile or talk to someone and be embarrassed that there’s a gap in your mouth. You don’t have to keep your mouth closed when you smile in pictures. When you go out to eat, you don’t have to think about normal processes in your mouth like chewing your food and eating whatever you want on the menu.
If you’ve ever had to worry about these things, implants may be the perfect, long-term solution that can wipe away your embarrassment and permanently restore confidence in your smile!
Who Needs Cosmetic Implants?
Whether you’re a younger or older patient who’s missing at least one tooth, implants can dramatically help your appearance.
If You Have Missing or Broken Teeth
Maybe you got a tooth knocked out when you were playing sports in high school. Maybe you had to get a tooth pulled, or have lost a tooth because it was infected. You might have cracked or chipped your tooth at some point. An implant can replace your missing or defective tooth or teeth.
If You Have Dentures
If you need dentures or if you already have dentures like thousands of other people do in the Grand Junction area, implants are a great alternative to help you achieve a more natural look. They can also help secure your dentures so you don’t have to worry about them falling out.
Grand Dental is a one-stop shop for implants: not only do we place implants, but we also restore implants. We’ll never refer you to another practice to get your implants taken care of—we take the time to get to know you and your concerns personally, and that allows us to provide the best care for you. Plus, you’ll save time getting everything taken care of in one place.
This also means you can come back to us for all your regular checkups to help make sure your implants last a lifetime!
How Can Cosmetic Implants Change Your Appearance and Your Life?
Improve Your Appearance
Implants are attractive because the crowns placed on top of the implants match the color and size of your natural teeth. No one will be able to tell the difference, and you won’t have to be self-conscious of anything that will draw unwanted attention to your mouth! You’ll be able to proudly show off your teeth in pictures and talk confidently to people again.
If you take care of them, implants are a lifelong solution. Not only are they strong—they’re typically made of titanium—but they’re also secure. Because your bones grow around the implant, it becomes part of your mouth and helps reduce bone loss.
Reduce Premature Aging
Have you ever noticed what someone’s mouth looks like when they’re missing their teeth, even when it’s closed? Are you that person? Bone loss in your jaw from missing teeth can actually lead to premature aging around your mouth. No one wants that!
Implants allow you to eat the foods you want again. This means you can chew normally, which keeps your jawbone strong. Because implants strengthen the bones underneath them, you can make sure your missing teeth don’t affect the appearance of your face around your mouth.
If you have dentures, you’ll notice how much more comfortable implants are. Implants can be attached to your dentures, so you don’t have to experience the instability of dentures anymore. Read more about implants and dentures in last month’s blog here.
How Do I Get Implants?
First, we’ll determine if your gums and jawbone are healthy enough for the implant post to be placed in your jawbone. If your jawbone isn’t really strong, we still may be able to use mini implants, which are smaller and don’t require as much bone. Or we can do grafting to provide structure where your implant will go so that it can be held in place.
Next, we’ll place the implant into your jawbone to fill in the missing tooth. This will serve as a steady anchor for your crowns or dentures to be placed on top. Depending on your jawbone, this usually does not take very long and can be done in one visit.
After your implants are placed, we’ll take the crown or crowns (depending on how many teeth you’re missing) that we custom fit to your teeth and place them on top of the implants. If you have dentures, we’ll lock those in place on the implants.
Will It Be Painful?
We want your implant experience to be comfortable, not nerve wracking and painful. We can provide sedation for you so that you can relax during the procedure.
What About the Cost?
Implants are a great lifelong investment. If you take care of your implants like you would your natural teeth—brushing and flossing regularly, coming in for your cleanings—they can last a lifetime and save you money in the long run on temporary fixes.
