In our previous post, we discussed the signs that it might be time for you to consider having a Smile Makeover. We mentioned that your poor oral health could be affecting your overall health, and today we’d like to go into that a little bit more. Researchers are studying the relationships between poor oral health and numerous health conditions. We selected three below to explain what researchers are finding so that you can see how serious of a situation this really is!

Heart Disease – We have known that poor oral health and heart disease go hand in hand for quite a while, but the exact links have always been a bit hidden to us. New research may have found an explanation. When your gums are bleeding, the bacteria enters the bloodstream and sticks to your blood platelets. These clumps turn into blood clots, which can cause damage to your heart or even a heart attack.

Pancreatic Cancer – This is a new connection that researchers are still trying to understand, but in a study done with men, they found that men who had had gum disease were 64% more likely to develop pancreatic cancer later in life.

Alzheimer’s – Alzheimer’s numbers continue to climb, and research is always expanding to try to find an explanation. While no explanation has been found, researchers did discover the bacteria p. gingivalis in the brains of Alzheimer’s patients, but they did not find it in brains of patients without Alzheimer’s. This is the same bacteria responsible for advanced gum disease.

As with most research, we have yet to discover direct links that gum disease is causing these other issues, but the evidence seems to be screaming that something serious is happening. We are encouraging our patients to take steps to prevent gum disease by following a thorough oral hygiene routine. January is peak season at the gym. People who haven’t stepped into the gym in years will be signing up this month as a part of their New Year’s resolutions! It’s a great way to stay active and keep your body healthy, but there are some concerns for your smile when exercising. Take a look below for more information. Dehydration and Decay – One of the biggest concerns for your teeth is dehydration. If you don’t adequately hydrate during exercise, you will not produce enough saliva to keep your teeth safe from harmful bacteria. This can increase your risk for decay. Keep that bottle of water nearby!

Sugary Sports Drinks – Sports drinks taste so good after a workout, but the sugar content in these beverages ruin the effect for your teeth. It’s always best to stick with water. If you need a boost of flavor, toss some fresh fruit and herbs in your water bottle, but stay away from the sugar-laden sports drinks.

It’s that time of year: gift giving, parties, family dinners, and mistletoe. Who doesn’t love to be caught under the mistletoe with the right person this time of year?After all, this is the season of love, and why not to share an unforgettable moment with a loved one. Recent studies have found that you aren’t just exchanging love when you give someone an intimate kiss, but you’re also exchanging about 80 million bacteria.

Before you start getting anxious thinking about 80 million bacteria, know that this is a drop in the bucket compared to the amount of bacteria already in your mouth. Your dentures go with you wherever you go. After all, you can’t speak or eat without them in, so it makes sense. When you come home at the end of the day, and you are preparing for bed, those dentures should come out and stay out until the next morning. This gives your dentures a chance to be cleaned, and it gives your mouth a break, but there are some more serious reasons to be sure that you are getting your denture-free time. Increased Plaque on the Tongue and Dentures – Even though you no longer have your natural teeth, plaque is still a concern. When you don’t take the time to remove and soak your dentures, plaque can build up on your false teeth. You might also see a build up on your tongue.
